Israeli airstrikes targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs

BEIRUT, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — The Israeli army targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs with seven strong airstrikes Monday night after sending warnings to residents in the area to evacuate, al-Jadeed local TV channel reported.
TV footage showed heavy black smoke rising from the areas targeted by the airstrikes, with a strong sound heard in the city.
The local TV channel said one of the airstrikes targeted an area in the Dahieh suburb close to the Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport.
Israel has intensified its airstrikes across Lebanon since last week, marking the most extensive Israeli military action in the country since 2006.
Israel’s Security Cabinet on Monday night approved “the next phase” of the military operation in Lebanon. ■
